A Sympathetic Supervisor Helps An Employee Address His Irresponsible And Abusive Drinking After A Broken Relationship
Barry got suspended from high school when he was fifteen years old and eventually found employment at a local copper smelting plant. For the past five years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working and conscientious individual who rarely takes off from work due to sickness.
Nearly three-and-a-half months ago he started going out with a young lady named Carol. They seemed to hit it off immediately and looked as if they had a lot of good times with one another.
When Barry met Carol, he almost never drank. This totally changed when they started dating on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, everything was going great until Carol without prior notice called Barry one night roughly 2 AM and said that she had to call off their relationship and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to Carol's apartment and found out in an instant that Carol had already moved out. Barry received this news very hard. In fact, he was astounded because they seemed to be getting along so very well.
So what did Barry do about Carol's leaving? Instead of working through his agony and pain, he started getting inebriated almost every night. It didn't take long for his coworkers and for his supervisor to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least three times per week and that he again and again called off ill. Furthermore, some of the workers made an appointment with staff in Human Resources and mentioned that Barry time after time came to work with a noticeable smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.
Barry's manager heard about all of this from Barry's co-workers and from Human Resources. So one Friday afternoon he called Barry into his office. He told Barry that he had recently noticed an explicit change in his attendance, work performance, sick time, and in his behavior.
"Barry, I'm not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that conversant with alcoholism facts, but I have seen quite a few of my relatives and friends go through some really bad problems due to their irresponsible and hazardous drinking. My suggestion is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse can do to a person."
"Why is this significant? When individuals engage in excessive and hazardous drinking, their drinking problems not only adversely affect the drinker, but they also negatively impact her or his family, friends, co-workers, relatives, and neighbors. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your abusive and hazardous drinking from our top-of-the-line employee's assistance program."
Barry admired his supervisor very much and as a result followed through with his suggestion the next work day when he called and scheduled an appointment with a healthcare professional in the employee's assistance program. Even though Barry didn't automatically feel any less depressed or feel better about the loss of Carol, he felt comfort knowing that his supervisor and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave Barry some psychological relief for the first time in more than a few months and he frankly felt some hope that he would get his life back on track.
